Dr Bike
Sheffield University's Dr Bike service, provided by Pedal Ready, has been used by over 600 people since its launch 18 months ago.
Provided as a service to the University's staff (almost 10% of whom cycle to work) the Dr Bike provides a safety check, a basic service and advice to users - including "go and visit RecycleBikes or your local bike shop" (urgently in some cases).
"At a recent session, a rider was advised not to use their bike under any circumstances, as the rim was so worn the wheel could collapse at any point" said Darren Hardwick of Sheffield University. "The wheel obliged and collapsed on the journey home. The rider was unharmed and then followed advice!"
