Scraper Bikes

Summer’s here, and it’s time to decorate your bike with sweet wrappers, kitchen foil and salvaged cardboard. And if you happen to live in Oakland, California, take a stand against gun crime too.

The second Oakland Peace Ride took place on July 25th, promoting green (and multicoloured) transport and to call for 'peace in the streets' in a town which has already seen scores of gun related murders this year.

(See the YouTube video of the Healin’ from Killin' ride).

Inspired by long time bike rebuilder Tyrone 'Champ' Stevenson, Scraper Bikes have been appearing around Oakland for several years, and following the success of a YouTube video by the Champ and Da Trunk Boiz, the phenomenon is now spreading, and with it, the messages of creativity, non violence, and green transport, fully supported by the Scraper Bike Crew.

"I have my bike, I don't need no car," says Stevenson.

Scraper enthusiasts are now pushing for a ‘Bikes 4 Life’ centre for cycling youth to meet and work. Sign their petition to the Oakland authorities here .
