Canyon on London Cycle Route

Cyclists by the Canal Canyon

Cyclists on London’s Regent’s Canal towpath have been negotiating a canyon in the middle of their cycle route.

The artwork, by 3D street artists Joe Hill and Max Lowry, features a 'canyon' commissioned by British Waterways to slow down cyclists and promote the Two Tings campaign which encourages cyclists and pedestrians to share London’s towpaths and abide by a code of conduct to avoid clashes along the canals.

The image, painted on canvas, blends into the pavement so that it looks like a Sheffield-style pothole from certain angles.

British Waterways’ towpath ranger Joseph Young said: “The majority of cyclists and pedestrians who use the towpaths share the space amicably. However, there are a handful of users who refuse to slow down and share the space with their fellow pedestrians and cyclists. That’s why we’ve commissioned this piece of art. We hope that it will shock them into slowing down to avoid falling into the canyon we’ve created.”

He added that the campaign wasn’t about restricting access, but about “appropriateness.” British Waterways plan to keep the canvas canyon to use in other areas in the future.
