Road cycling courses in Sheffield for winter 2017/18

Whether you want to travel to the shop on a quiet backstreet or make a long commute along busy roads and junctions, there are straightforward techniques you can employ to minimise the risks when cycling.

Road Confidence 1 and 2 are introductory courses to cycling on quiet roads covering basic concepts such as road positioning, overtaking parked cars and negotiating junctions. Each course is two weeks and runs as a weekly three hour session.

Road Confidence 3 is an advanced course for urban cyclists, based in the city centre. It covers many aspects of interacting with traffic on busy roads and junctions, running as a weekly four hour session over two weeks. (It is recommended that you attend RC1 and RC2 first or discuss your cycle experience with the Pedal Ready office first).

Road cyclists who have already reached Level 3 cycling, may also book a bespoke one-to-one session which will be tailored to their current level of expertise. The session lasts up to two hours, and takes place at a time and location of the trainee’s choosing (subject to trainer availability).

Road Confidence courses are free to those who live or work in Sheffield. Book now to join a course in your area!

CPD courses: Teaching adults to learn to ride/Bikeability Refresher course

Teaching adults to ride a bike for the first time

For further information contact Pedal Ready

This course is aimed at National Standards Instructors who want to work on the technique for teaching adults who cannot ride. The course will include both theoretical and practical elements and so it is essential that participants have a bike (to get to practical venue – if this is a problem give us a ring) and clothing suitable for poor weather.

Aims: To give participants an opportunity to discuss how adults learn to ride and to deliver a session to each other.

Objectives: By the end of the course, participants should have had an opportunity:

  1. to discuss the barriers adults face when trying to learn to ride a bike for the first time.
  2. to look at how a trainer can help the learner to overcome those barriers.
  3. to practice delivering a learn to ride training session to other course participants.
  4. to consider risk assessment on a learn to ride session.

The session will start in the classroom to look at and discuss the theoretical issues. We will then ride to a venue to practice delivering the practical session. We will finish off with feedback from the practical session.

You will need to bring

  • A bike
  • Packed lunch (or buy from local shop)
  • Clothing appropriate to the weather
  • Basic tools you might need for bike adjustments (There will be tools available if you are not sure what to bring)

Tea, coffee and biscuits are provided

Cost £50

Bikeability Refresher course including snaking people

This mainly practical course will give instructors an opportunity to deliver level 2 outcomes and obtain feedback on their delivery. It will be an opportunity to reflect on good practice and is aimed at instructors who did their NSI course some time ago or who have not had much opportunity to deliver Bikeability.

The course will also involve a look at the principles of snaking and give participants the opportunity to practice snaking a group around.
