Ideally you will bring your own bike to work on but if this is a problem we will be able to provide a bike to work on if we have advance notice.

If this regular course is not for you then we can still offer a maintenance one to one.

Riding a bike is a lot of fun, but keeping it roadworthy can tax even the most enthusiastic rider. We aim to give you the skills to look after your bike yourself, so you’ll always be able to keep on pedalling along.

We tailor our maintenance sessions to build on the skills you already have. We can start off with the basics of how to remove wheels, tyres and tubes, and show you how to fix any punctures you pick up on your journeys.

We can also show you how to keep your bike clean, to stop all that dirt from wearing away at the gears and chain, how to lubricate the moving parts (so they stay moving!) and how to spot when parts get worn and need replacing.

If you want to take it further we will also take you through setting up your brakes so they are always ready to stop you when the need arises, and how to tune your gears so they always change when you want them to, and stay put when you want that as well.

We can also show you how to take the play out of the bearings on your bike, to keep everything turning smoothly, but there is a limit to what we can show you:

We do not cover setting up hydraulic disc brakes because of the wide variety of different makes and models, all of which require different approaches and tools.

We also do not cover workshop based repairs such as replacing bottom brackets, complete bearing strip downs and the like – If you want to take your maintenance skills to the next level then there are maintenance classes available in Sheffield:

Both Recycle Bikes and Edinburgh Bicycle Coop in Heeley run cycle maintenance courses. You can find out about them by visiting their websites;
